Liberian Radios Help Spread Word About Ebola

Most people know that a major way in helping to prevent getting a disease is to become more educated on it. One way that Liberia is helping slow the spread of Ebola is by using their radio exposure to help raise awareness and education on the topic. DJ's and music artists in many parts of Liberia have started writing and releasing music to help spread information on the disease and ways to prevent it. In Liberia, the radio is pretty much everywhere including shops, cars, and most homes. The fact that radio stations are so big over there gave people the unique idea to play music and even talk about Ebola on their talk shows.

I think that this is an excellent way to spread awareness and information on the topic. Personally, I listen to music a lot and I feel like this is an amazing way to spread awareness and slow the spread of something such as Ebola.

The article explains how the government first published statements that said Ebola was something that was to be scared of, which naturally made people run. However, things suddenly changed once Liberian artists started spreading more positive lyrics about the disease in their music. The lyrics that were being put into the music were starting to give people hope and also allowed the people to forget the horrible messages originally posted by the government.

Normally, when people listen to music, they pay attention to the lyrics and tend to remember the more catchy ones, which is why this trend is truly amazing. I believe that we could use the large amount of people who listen to music to our advantage. If we started doing more things like the Liberians are doing to spread good messages about things such as Ebola, people will maybe start becoming more educated on important topics such as wide-spread diseases.

  1. I agree. Music is a great way to get the information out about Ebola. It is also a great way to help the people in Liberia deal with this terrible disease. I have learned so much through music and those are the things I remember the most. We all have learned through music at one point in our lives. For example, I learned to count and I learned my alphabet through music. Can you think of some things you have learned through music?

  2. This is an amazing way to spread the word on how to stop Ebola. But, what about the people in Liberia who don't have radios. The way that the artists are spreading word of Ebola is really cool. If the government wants to have people to control then, they shouldn't send out a message that will make people run. They should say something like how to help prevent Ebola, and how to protect your self from Ebola and other diseases.

  3. I agree, music is a great way to spread the word. Most everybody listens to music in some way, and there are many different types also. If everybody listens to music and the radio and we put how to prevent this disease and more information on this disease by spreading the word, it could help. It is not just me that gets songs stuck in their heads all the time, so not only will this information be spread, it will stick.

  4. This is a great way to spread the word about Ebola. I mean music is my life so I wouldn't mind hearing about it in a song. I always get bored hearing about it on talk radio because they are so dull with it. In my opinion the people in Liberia are pretty smart to do this.
