Cuban Instruments Need Repair

In Cuba, many instruments are in need of repair. Andres Martinez and his two apprentices work to help repair and lend instruments to children in need of them. Many instruments in Cuba are broken and very cheaply made, which is why Andres Martinez opened his workshop three years ago so that the talented musicians there could compete and perform.

I think that what Martinez is doing is amazing. I love how he really cares about the children and genuinely wants to help. He and his apprentices are doing a great thing for the children of Cuba. Because I play a few instruments, I know how easy it is to harm them and even the smallest things can cause the sound to not be good quality. I also know how important it is for the instrument to sound just right or else the whole piece may sound bad, which is why it is important to have the
instrument to be in good shape.

  1. I agree with you, I also play an instrument and they can be hard to care for and also very expensive to buy and fix. It makes it even harder if you don’t have the right conditions or supplies to care for it. It is also a bit harder if you are really involved with your instrument, like us. Both you and I are in the Marching Band, which there you can drop it, run into someone, someone steps on it, or it gets hit, specifically with a color guard flag. It is sad that in some places people don’t have these opportunities to care for them properly since music is such a wonderful thing.

  2. I agree with this instruments take a lot to care for. If you don't have the right things to care for them it can be a hassle. The instrument I play is very expensive and one reed alone can cost up to nineteen dollars. I think its amazing what Martinez is doing. Children in Cuba don't have the money to fix them on their own so he is helping them. These kids could now have a future in the art of music because of what Martinez is doing.

  3. I think that it is very important for these instruments to be cared for. I play the violin and have to constantly pay for upgrades and repairs to maintain a quality instrument. These young musicians could have a future in music but may never uncover their full potential just because of a shortage of money. The children in Cuba don't have the money needed to maintain an instrument to the best degree, so I think what Martinez is doing is wonderful. With his help, these children will receive a better education, diverse music experience, and a brighter future.
